  1. Hmm, so how long before we have a TV prog called ‘Degradation’ where only the top-polling wilderness area reserve survives (till the next series). I’m sure BP, Shell, RTZ and most of the world’s banks and pension schemes would be keen to buy advertising during it. And perhaps Clarkson would find a new home unleashing Caterpillar’s finest on the week’s loser , “Conservation doesn’t come much tougher than this”.

More usefully, it might help to give this link in preference to those you’ve provided, Mark:

Hopefully this dystopian vision will remain a figment of your dark and twisted imagination Haematopus! But you raise a serious point – there are several projects in this contest, all with worthy objectives, but only one will get the funding. I suppose projects have always had to compete for money (and it is right that projects should demonstrate both need and a likely successful outcome in order to receive funding) but the problem we have is that the conservation of wildlife is always such a low priority for governments, corporations and society as a whole so the money will always be tight and good projects will not get funding.
It’s up to us I suppose to ensure that as many people as possible recognise the importance of wildlife and the need to push it up the list of priorities.
