That’s another eagle down then

independent logoIt’s not an accident that a newspaper calling itself The Independent – and wanting to be forceful and influential – would have an eagle as its logo.

So, that’s another dead eagle then.

The Independent has been a pretty good newspaper over the years and it has also been a leading newspaper on environmental matters. This is partly due to the skill of former environment editor, Michael McCarthy, working under a whole variety of editors of the paper over the years (here’s what one said of him).  Stories that might struggle to get into the pages of other papers sometimes appeared on the front page of the Independent.

And this is what Mike wrote when he stood down as environment editor.

And here’s a White tailed Eagle poisoned in Scotland. Please sign our e-petition to ban driven grouse shooting.

  1. I, for one, shall miss the Independent. It is going to be carrying on as an on-line only publication but I do like a sheet of paper in my hands. The Guardian too is said to be under serious financial pressure; if that goes and we are left with only the red-tops plus the the Times and the Telegraph it will be a very bleak outlook in many ways, including with respect to the reporting of environmental issues.

    1. Only hate, fear, and titties sell papers. And apparently even the latter isn’t the sure thing it used to be. It is disturbing how the hate and fear brigade have such a chokehold on the psyche of the nation though. I blame Blair for leaping into bed with them to get his dodgy dossier and excuse for war enough public support. We had the chance in the late 1990s and early 00s to really reform the press and guide people back to actually being nice to each other, then Blair needed people to be bigoted bastards for him and lo the Scum and Wail were waiting with open arms.

  2. I missed this when it was published. Lots of people don’t like to read of such things, hence possibly the demise of the Indy

  3. Mark, your link to what one of his former editor said of MM is actually for a story about OPat’s refusal to sign Britain up to a Neo-nics ban. You might want to change this at some point. Happy birding.
