  1. I read a ‘science fiction’ short story once which centred around a man’s dozen or so pet animals, which were the only remaining non-human animals on earth. He was fighting a court case, as everyone else wanted them put down on the grounds that they were taking up resources which could be used by humans. That’s the logical end-point of our current trajectory. The guy lost the case of course.

  2. It applies now. We are thrilled to have regular visits from house sparrows in our garden after a gap of more than 10 years. Starlings have also returned for the first time since a failed nesting attempt in 2014.

    1. That is a point, I haven’t seen a starling all winter here. Used to be tonnes of them knocking about, this winter; not a sausage.

We do have some sparrows though. Although it was only a couple of years ago we had only one or two and now we have an increasing flock. You know what other common bird I’ve not seen for a while? Coal tits. There used to be tonnes of those knocking about too, but I haven’t seen one for a year or so now.
