I have a cold and a cough

They are just a cold and a cough because I’ve been sticking things up my nose and trying to find my tonsils to do lateral flow tests, all of which have been negative.

I don’t think I’ve ever had hypochondiacal tendencies, I’m more likely to think and say ‘I expect it’s nothing’ but in these days of the virus then coughs and sniffles take a slightly less everyday priority – or is it just me?

But a consequence is that there is no book review this week. Back next week.

  1. Really delighted to read that yesterday members of the National Trust voted 2 to 1 to ban trail hunting on their land. The vote has to be ratified by the Trustees but with that overwhelming majority for the ban I don’t see how they can fail to ratify the vote.
Good to read that Mr Hankinson was convicted of breaking the law.
This is yet another indication, if it is needed, of how law breaking is associated with hunting of all types including driven grouse shooting.
I hope this really good news helps to clear up your cold Mark.

The CLA have pointed out that the overall vote count was a small number of all NT members (I’m ‘believing’ their estimations for an effect). The balance of the vote was, however, in strong support of motion.

Perhaps the CLA hadn’t sufficiently motivated their NT members to come out in opposition to the motion? Or perhaps the non-voters could be counted as abstentions, (Comparisons with other contentious votes).

      Back to swabs…

Scraping the swab over the tonsils may (? will likely) invoke a gagging response. Shining a torch into the mouth and studying the associatated literature of the tests can help in locating tonsils. Look past your wisdom teeth and slightly toward the airway; and hold the tongue down, as it can obstuct the view. When it comes to nasal swabs remember if you have a deflected nasal septum; choosing the wrong nostril does not attain the stipulated insteriton depth for the swab and may cause additional discomfort.

  2. It’s the season for sniffles and sneezes. Hope you’re feeling better soon Mark. Time for a hot toddy and a large dose of vitamin c.

  3. Get well soon, Mark. I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you what Prof Tim Spector tells us – that the Government aren’t broadcasting the current symptoms of Covid – headache, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough – and you can’t get a PCR test if you don’t have the old symptoms (fever, cough, loss of sense of smell and taste) unless through the Zoe app. I wonder why this government would do such a thing…….
    Stay safe

  4. Not just you, mark. My other half woke feeling terrible the other day, aching, but after sticking the test thingy in throat and nose, its nothing…. two years ago, it would just have been paracetamol and not wory about it ……….. And I have had a cough for 30 years. I know the symptom guide says a new cough, but, when you are with strangers, and you start coughing ,they dont know its an old frieend and not a new cough …. the looks from passers by ……yes, all of our perceptions are altered.
