Oscar Dewhurst – Short-eared Owl

OD_SuffolkMarApr2016-51

Oscar writes: I had been sat in North hide at Minsmere for an hour earlier on this day, then walked around to the sluice bushes to see if two Firecrests I’d found the previous day were still there. They were, but remained elusive so I got talking to someone who had been in the hide with me earlier, only for him to tell me that 5 minutes after I left a Short-eared Owl appeared on the mud just in front of the hide, before walking into the reeds and sitting down! Not expecting much, but with nothing else planned, I headed back around there with a friend and was told it was sat in the reeds just on the left of the hide. After nearly an hour it started moving, eventually wandering out of the reeds, through the scrape fence, and sitting out in the open. Clearly it decided this wasn’t for it though, as it retraced its steps and disappeared again 2 minutes later!
