It’s your difficult choice

I’ve been fretting over how to cast my votes in the Birdwatch Birders’ Choice awards.

The only one that I have completely decided upon is my choice for the Guano Award for environmental harm – DEFRA deserves to ‘win’ this and let’s hope the results are published before or during an election campaign. Whereas the three overseas nominees deserve condemnation they might well shrug off a slap on the wrist from Birdwatch readers so it leaves Norfolk County Council and DEFRA. Both deserve condemnation but I think DEFRA deserve the top (bottom) place. All those badgers? Hopeless on Hen Harriers? A weak Environment Bill? Pretty clear really.

So that’s one award sorted out in my mind (although maybe I will change my mind…). Quite a few others to go. That was the relatively easy one.

  1. DEFRA deserves to be lambasted for its pathetic performance but for sheer, wilful harm to the environment I don’t think it matches up to Bolsonaro. Trump is also a strong candidate both for his own appalling war on wildlife and wider environmental protections and for his role in encouraging the likes of Bolsonaro so for me its a toss up between those two.
Maybe there should be domestic and international sub-categories for the Guano Award in future?

  2. Yes I think there needs to be a worldwide Guano award which undoubtedly goes to Trump and his lacky Bolserano. As far as a U.K. award is concerned Ms Coffey at Defra must rate very highly if not the top most.
