Do you have the energy?

A Guardian article has led me to find some new-to-me sources of information.

But the story was about the fact that the UK is on a record run of coal-free power days – 56 days and counting.

That is quite a transformation, but let’s not get too cocky as there are plenty of European countries that have done far better, though also many who have done worse. This graphic tells some of the story;

I think this is one of the most interesting seres of graphs I’ve seen for a long time. When I was a lad there was a country called Czechoslovakia: look at the difference between the Czech Republic and Slovakia. And compare Poland and France. Which country would you like to live in from an energy source point of view? I’d pick Sweden (with ABBA playing in the background).

And there is much more of interest to be found at Sandbag Climate Power and Drax Electric Insights.

  1. “most interesting seres of graphs”

    Certainly the best piece of legerdemain I’ve seen this week. An honest graphic would at least have the area of the national squares reflecting the total generation. And generation is not the same as consumption.

  2. Mark. I was feeling lazy this morning and promised myself I’d finish a book I am reading. A very very good book.
    Before I did that, I took my usual peek at your blog. Mistake. You introduced us to Sophie. So I read her blog, then read her article on Storks (no, I didn’t know there was so much controversy either), then signed up to subscribe, then read the rest of her newsletter and all the links and the links within the links. Then she sent me today’s newsletter and I……,well you get the picture.
    And now you’ve gone and done it again!! New sources of information indeed. I’ve already lost a morning and the dog can wait no longer. Can you stop now.

    Love the Drax one though, and the the graphs. What on Earth is happening in Latvia?
    No no no. Dog first.
