More on bird flu

North West Bird Watching Festival at Martin Mere cancelled because of bird flu.

A dead Hen Harrier with bird flu from Highland in this week’s non-informative update from Defra (see here).  Also five Gannets tested positive from two locations in Cornwall. Remember, the number of birds testing positive may not be the number of birds dying at the site, it’s just the number of birds collected, analysed and testing positive. Nor are negative records included in this list.  And these birds may have died some weeks ago – they are weekly updates but not necessarily of the events of the last week.

If you look at the ‘latest situation’ reports they deal with captive birds (click here). There are updates from yesterday and Sunday. On both dates the cases are either described as ‘captive birds’ or ‘poultry’. I assume that the ‘captive birds’ near Burscough was Martin Mere – it seems reasonable to assume so.

Doesn’t look like bird/poultry flu is going away, does it?
