RSPB statement re Climate Change Committee’s annual report on the UK’s progress in cutting emissions
Katie-jo Luxton, the RSPB’s director of conservation, said: “Nature is our greatest ally in tackling climate change and this week’s extreme heat is yet another reminder of why we need to go further and faster. From renewable energy in the right places helping to reduce fossil fuel use and cut people’s bills, to healthy woodlands and peatlands keeping carbon locked away.
It’s great to see progress on peatland restoration, but much of this momentum will be lost when the majority of funding in England comes to end in March 2027. It is vital that the UK Government urgently announces new dedicated peatland restoration funding, which was initially set out last year but has yet to emerge. Practitioners need certainty and confidence that the money won’t dry up if they are to keep delivering the progress needed.”
