12,000 signatures

Gavin Gamble’s e-petition to ban driven grouse shooting is still waiting for a response from Defra 20 days after passing 10,000 signatures. Today it has just passed 12,000 signatures.  Well done Gavin – slow but steady progress.  You seem to have the minister stumped for a reply…

Here are the leading constituencies so far – many of them are old friends (all with 50+ signatures):

  1. Inverness, Badenoch and Strathspey, Drew Hendry MP, 86 signatures
  2. Skipton and Ripon, Julian Smith MP, 69 signatures
  3. Thirsk and Malton, Kevin Hollinrake MP, 69 signatures
  4. alder Valley, Craig Whittaker, 67 signatures
  5. Ross, Skye and Lochaber, Ian Blackford MP, 65 signatures
  6. Dumfries and Galloway, Alister Jack MP, 65 signatures
  7. Sheffield Hallam, Jared O’Mara, 64 signatures
  8. Isle of Wight, Bob Seeley MP, 63 signatures
  9. Penrith and The Border, Rory Stewart MP, 58 signatures
  10. High Peak, Ruth George MP, 56 signatures
  11. Sheffield Central, Paul Blomfield MP, 56 signatures
  12. Argyll and Bute, Brendan O’Hara MP, 55 signatures
  13. Suffolk Coastal, Therese Coffey MP, 54 signatures
  14. Stroud, David Drew MP, 52 signatures
  15. Westmorland and Lonsdale, Tim Farron MP, 52 signatures

It’s nice to see the current Defra junior minister, Therese Coffey and her predecessor, Rory Stewart, both in the list. And the list also has that rare species (but commoner than nesting pairs of Hen Harriers in England) a LibDem MP.

…although whether Barking will ever attract a signature remains to be seen.

  1. Interesting to see that Therese Coffey’s constituency is 13th in the list of constituencies supporting the ban.
Is it worth reminding her that Members of Parliament are required to abide by a Code of Conduct. Under “Duties of Members” at paragraph III.6 of the Code, which states “Members have a general duty to act in the interests of the nation as a whole; and a special duty to their constituents.”
