If you did have a bet on Oscar Whisky yesterday then it would have been a profitable one but the odds turned out to be too short for me so I watched this horse look classy at Cheltenham. Maybe I should have had a bet as I ended up making a small loss on the day- but I was right that there were no waxwings, unlike last year.
My 2012 bird list did get into double figures before I got out of bed but on the way to Cheltenham there were three red kites west of Burford and on the way home there were two short-eared owls before I got to Stow on the Wold. So my 2012 bird list is:
Wood pigeon, robin, starling, goldfinch, greenfinch, black-headed gull, jackdaw, blue tit, blackbird, chaffinch, great tit, collared dove, dunnock, buzzard, carrion crow, magpie, red kite, house sparrow, kestrel, pheasant, red-legged partridge, pied wagtail, common gull, lesser black-backed gull, herring gull, fieldfare and rook.
It’s a start, as is the fact that a couple of days ago the epetition on vicarious liability for offences against birds of prey in England passed a landmark – 5000 dsignatures. Like my year list there is a long way to go. Please pass the word and ask people to sign up.

Can some one explain why the RSPB are not encouraging their members to sign up to this petition?
John —as sad as it is think the fact is majority of members are not that bothered or think it is the same as previous campaign also perhaps rather casual as there is a long time that it will stay open.I feel exactly like yourself but it will need a massive effort from RSPB to get members to vote, perhaps time to have a word with Martin Harper as he often asks our opinions on various issues and unfortunately doesn’t get many comments on his blog usually perhaps because he has not got Mark’s provocative style which is not a criticism of either of them just a personal opinion.
However if people do not comment on Martins blog it makes it harder for him to know what issues are important to us.
Birds of prey?
Offences?
Here’s something that caught my eye t’other day.

By the way Mark, thanks for an excellent daily read. I’ve been visiting for some time now, but haven’t got ’round to commenting until now.
