Oscar writes: This Cormorant was taken in London last week. The reason for the dark colour of the water is that the water is under a bridge, and the reflection of the bridge’s underside is very dark. Because the cormorant was in the sun I had to underexpose, resulting in a completely black background.

A truly stunning image – well done.
Thanks Ernest!
Phabulous Phalacrocorax photo!
Hugh – isn’t it just?! The pattern ont he back is gorgeous – I’ve never noticed that so clearly in’reall ife’. How could any fisherman want rid of such a beautiful birds?
Thank you Hugh
I dislike the cormorant like you do the Linnet, Mark. I just think they are ugly and rather boring! I can understand the anglers frustrations, some waters are plagued by them and they do eat a lot of fish….
Did you see the Chinese fishing Cormorants on TV yesterday evening ? apparently they only fish for tourists these days – but the underwater footage showed what an effective, elegant predator Cormorants are. I think they’re amazing – not least having to dry out after a fishing swim ! Primitive, but effective and to be admired – and I rather like them, too.
I can’t see that Cormorants are boring, annoying yes, especially on a warm day when expecting a large raptor any moment and seeing one circling at about a thousand feet. But great numbers of birds are often memorable. I was at Falsterbo, Sweden a few years ago and saw so many passing along the coast one morning they turned the sea black, I guessed there were 10,000 but could have been more
