Readers of this blog are generally satisfied with the performance of wildlife NGOs – I think you are all just a little too generous.
However, although there is a clear majority who disagree with the idea that there are too many NGOs, a large minority – 43% of respondents – believe that we have too many wildlife NGOs.
Tomorrow – how do ‘Tory’ and ‘Labour’ readers of this blog differ in what they think?

I wonder though, if people thinking there are too many wildlife NGOs doesn’t mean they are not supportive of their work in general – just feel they are too fragmented when organisations have overlapping interests and calls for a landscape scale approach to conservation (unless they cooperate well – will share information, join up reserves, co-manage etc).
Additionally, it’s kind of hard to know who to support when you’re limited budget-wise and confronted with a large list of conservation and wildlife NGOs and want to support all of them.
(not saying I agree, mind, just thought experiments for ‘yes’ other than being anti-wildlife or feeling NGOs have too much influence)
Luci – that’s how I would interpret it too. But we might both be wrong! Personally, I believe that nature would be better served by a smaller number of more powerful wildlife NGOs – provided they are prepared to use their power. I discuss this a bit in Chapters 15 and 16 of Fighting for Birds
