Just another trap

photo-1

The photograph shows a perfectly legally set (I believe) funnel trap which is one of a series along a scenic tourist route in the Cairngorms National Park.  The trap is along the A939 Grantown on Spey to Bridge of Brown road (Grid Ref NJ086204).  The estate is Glenlochy (managed by M. Osborne).

  1. I believe you are wrong. These are obviously litter that has fallen from the back of a lorry. These should be collected as soon as possible for the benefit of the National Park and its visitors.

  2. This is just ‘two-fingers’ to the mothering aunties…unless…unless there’s a camera trap nearby to catch some passing ‘bunny hugger’ whacking it with a rock!

Of course it also makes it much easier for passing RSPB staff to stuff a ring ouzel in! (Should they happen to have a spare about their person)

  3. I wonder which unfortunate beasts this abomination is aimed at!?

A there was no actual condemnation of the practice, I “liked” this post for the fact that you brought it to our attention; definitely not a “like” for the trap itself!

  4. Anyone walking along the road could bump it to that quiet legally, it is within the curtilage of the highway. Best thing would be for the grass-cutting flail to pass over it…

  5. These traps are only legal if they are checked at least once a day. According to the number of cage traps I have seen in the Cairngorms containing decaying remains of wild animals this is not being carried out in all cases. In fact how could every one one of the tens of the thousands of traps be checked daily on the large estates in Scotland. In my opinion this would be an impossible task !

  6. Question – How many Red Squirrels have been killed in these traps? If Red Squirrels are killed [which they are] then how is the trap legal. It is against the law to kill a legally protected species!
