Yesterday’s mystery bird was a Pheasant – did you all get it? I find bird identification much more difficult when they are plucked and X-rayed.
It was part of a package of game birds that a group of us bought at Lidgate’s in Holland Park Avenue, London some time ago.
We assume this Pheasant was shot but there is no sign at all of lead shot in the X-ray. That might be because the shot went straight through, it was in the guts (which were butchered out), it was shot in the head or neck, or (unlikely) because it was snared or bashed over the head with a stick. Lidgate said that all the game we bought came from Yorkshire, and then they said it came from Yorkshire Game so perhaps they aren’t all from Yorkshire except by way of Yorkshire Game. No matter.
And how about today’s mystery bird?

Red Grouse?
I’d go for red grouse as well. You’d certainly get a nice dose of lead from it anyway.
Leaded Red Grouse… or Lead Peppered Red Grouse?
Oleaginous Hemispingus
Going by the size of those shot its a quail.
Led Grouse – Plumbum lagopus!
