Oscar writes: I was in Suffolk hoping to photograph Bitterns, but unfortunately had no luck whatsoever, and only saw two in the week, both at a distance of about 200m! Luckily there were plenty of other things to photograph, like this Little Egret. It is in fact the same individual I photographed from the same place at the same time last year!

Absolutely beautiful, Oscar – but try Shapwick/Ham Wall next time for your Bitterns & pick up some Great Whites along the way !
It’s on the list! Wouldn’t mind watching those Little Bitterns too. Hopefully they’ll start colonising before too long!
Super picture. I am curious to know how you know it is the same individual as one you saw a year previously.
Jonathan – slightly deformed beak!
I should have looked more closely! Looks like an adaptation for prising seeds from pine cones!
Funnily enough, we nicknamed it crossbill!
