Well done to Chris Packham for his latest contributions to highlighting what really goes on over large swathes of the uplands. Why is it, I wonder, that public education has been left to a few dedicated individuals while our well-funded conservation organisations seem only interested in keeping their heads down and maintaining a dubious and ineffectual status quo?
On past performance, the CA and their fellow travellers will be going into meltdown over this video let alone the promise a whole series of them. Having spectacularly failed when they tried the direct route of calling for Chris Packham to be sacked, I’ve no doubt that they will try more devious ways in which to pressurise the BBC to close him down. All of us who support Chris’s principled stand and his right to express his views must be ready to back him in whatever way we can against such hypocritical attacks. One way to do so indirectly is, of course, is to redouble our efforts to get people to sign the petition.
John – well said. I suspect Chris gets a lot more grief than any of us know about – and that makes his principled stand all the more laudable. He gains nothing from standing up for his beliefs (me neither by the way!) – but gets threats, abuse, and attacks all the time.
Poor Chris seems to already be facing quite a lot of abuse over this. I’ve left him a message of support in the YouTube comments and I would suggest others do the same! It is fantastic to have a household name on board as a champion of the cause and I think we should let him know how much his efforts are appreciated.
If you go to the Youtube to watch this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8YjOa0xVJk) you will find almost all of the comments are by shooters attacking Chris Packham (several by ‘known characters). Perhaps the more informed and articulate readers of this blog would like to redress the balance.
John – I have – thank you
yes, done.
Chris is a star, he tells it like it is. Those who don’t like him, don’t like the truth.
Its wrong to kill animals for fun , then try/ to call it a sport
Good to see you commenting on the Youtube site, Mark. Not at all surprised to see sly ad hominem attacks directed at you. To pick up one of the epithets used, don’t you think ‘Rabble Rousing for Nature’ would make a splendid alternative name for your blog.
Brilliant work guys, thank you
I read ‘Fingers in the Sparkle Jar’ on Friday, stayed up all night to finish it. What a brilliant, honest guy Chris is and the only thing I can see was ‘wrong’ with him as a kid was that he was intelligent and thoughtful when so many around him weren’t. The hassle he is getting from the bad shooters must be reminiscent of the hard times he got from fellow school pupils. Team Avery/Packham is formidable, if pissing off twerps was an Olympic event you’d bring a gold back for Team GB.
This whole campaign has given me, a young aspiring naturalist, hope for the future. I think Chris Packham is very unique in that he pushes above the parapet and puts his neck continuously on the guillotene – with no benefit to himself at all – but for his love and passion for conserving the natural world. I think that those who abuse him are extremely sad individuals protecting middle-ages practices which have no place or pride in modern society. I hope Chris knows that there are many young people who are learning from this campaign and that some of us will no longer stand for apathy. Thank you Mark for all that you do, you are amazing. Thank you both.
