I’ve sent off my two penn’orth. It’s such a fag to keep sending off missives to my MP that I’m pretty sure are just chucked straight into the bin after doing the minimum required by law (ie a box ticking reply from an assistant) but it’s the least we, Friends of Hen Harriers, can do. Mine won’t win any prizes for literary merit or scientific insight, but they’re from the heart. If you’re thinking about writing but haven’t done so yet, can I say “just do it” 🙂
I know you’ll be brilliant on the 31st, Mark. Thank You.
I was told by my MP that they take notice when they receive bespoke letters from constituents so I offer that it’s incumbent on grassroots community campaigners to fire their two penn’orth. Mark has made it easy for us but weight will be given to bespoke offerings be they from the heart or full of scientific references.
What I would like to understand is how these submissions will be dealt with other than simply publishing them. Will MPs be provided with some kind of synoptic assessment or just 250 in favour of a ban 250 against a ban kind of evaluation?
I also wonder also why the “Protect” petition is being considered, it has a long way to go to reach the required 100k. If it does then great because we’d get a second shot at the issue;)
I wrote to my Conservative MP on this matter six weeks ago and have heard nothing at all in reply, despite rattling his cage four times since then. Perhaps he has passed my comments to Defra, perhaps anything with “petition” in the subject goes to the bottom of his pile. Who knows? Sadly I remain completely in the dark.
I’ve started using ‘They Work For You. com’, to send the e-mail. It is ‘numerically’ recorded and followed up later as to whether you receive a reply or not. Maybe helps a bit to generate a response!
Thanks – I’ve just used that avenue for a further attempt. Fingers crossed!
My MP is Sir Henry Bellingham.
Nuff said.
Here is the reply from my Tory MP. Better than some I’m sure but……. Can anyone comment on the part about the sssi grouse moors favourable or recovering condition comment?
Dear Mr Wright,
Thank you for contacting me about grouse shooting.
Let me say first of all that I am an animal lover and as such I do not personally support, and would not seek to encourage, the sport of grouse shooting.
I am especially concerned about the illegal persecution of raptors and I would encourage anyone with information about it to report what they know to the authorities. I believe that the Government’s commitment to tackling wildlife crime was highlighted by its decision to fund the UK’s specialist National Wildlife Crime Unit fully until at least 2020.
One encouraging sign is that the vast majority of grouse moors that are sites of special scientific interest are now in favourable or recovering condition, whereas only around half were in that state in 2006. This reflects growing awareness among moorland managers of the importance and sensitivity of upland biodiversity. I hope this improvement in land managers’ sensitivity to these issues will continue.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the debate but rest assured that I will continue to do what I can to ensure animal welfare is promoted.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
With all best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
Sir David Amess MP
[Member of Parliament for Southend West]
