Gems from the written evidence 19 – Nature Scotland

A view from someone in an industry that suffers because of driven grouse shooting;

  • I work in the Wildlife Tourism industry and I can only take my clients to areas where driven Red Grouse does not occur. All my main species I want to show them have been removed. Species like Peregrine Falcons, Golden Eagles, Goshawk, Hen Harrier and Short eared Owls for birds and now extinct in England Pine Marten and Wild Cat!

  1. I am a wildlife tourist with a particular interest in chironomids. If it wasn’t for driven grouse shooting chironomid populations would be in serious decline and I would cancel my annual holiday to East Glossop.

    1. So Gerard, you’re saying that DGS is good because it is bringing about a decline in non-biting midges which are excellent indicators of environmental conditions?

    2. Can you explain to us in layman terms how driven grouse shooting benefits non biting midges?
