Tim Melling: San Ignacio lagoon on the Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula is one of a small number of lagoons where Grey Whales go to mate and give birth. They feed in the Arctic during the summer months then make a huge migration thousands of miles to reach the breeding lagoons during winter. Baby Grey Whales are born without blubber so need warmer water for the first few weeks of life. San Ignacio is the best place to encounter friendly whales, although the habit of coming to boats for a fuss only started in 1976, but is now a very common occurence. There is no chasing of whales here. The whales actively come to the boats and seem to enjoy the encounter just as much as humans do.
