Tim writes: I photographed these wild Scarlet Macaws at Corcovado National Park at the extreme south of Costa Rica on the Pacific coast. They are enormous birds, usually fly round in pairs and show a dazzling display of red, blue and yellow. They are also extremely noisy so usually give you some warning that they are about to fly over. Although I have seen Scarlet Macaws many times in captivity this was the first time I have seen them in the wild. I was in a boat at the time so had my versatile “landscape lens” rather than my telephoto. But I was pleased with the image showing the macaws in their natural habitat.

A 200mm lens is a good all-rounder for nature photography.
Maybe I’m only saying that because my longest lens is 200mm?
But it’s not always about trying to get as close as possible to the subject.
In this case the ‘landscape’ shot works well.
I hope those Macaws are safer in their habitat than the UK’s Hen Harriers are.
