Can you name the current Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs?
Let’s have a recap:
Maria Eagle (Garston and Halewood) October 2013 – September 2015
Kerry McCarthy (Bristol East) September 2015 – June 2016
Rachael Maskell (York Inner) June 2016 – February 2017
and now…
Sue Hayman (Workington) from February 2017
Time to see some real opposition to the government.

Interesting appointment given many of rumours surrounding the future the Defra post-Brexit and the future of agricultural support. Defra are one of the largest employers in Mrs Hayman’s constituency with around 500 people employed in the BCMS / RPA office in Workington. Closure of that office would be devastating for an already struggling local economy.
Labour are really great on the environment because apparently Jeremy Corbyn bought a ‘Save the Whale’ badge as long ago as 1970. Job done, eh?
What is point….
Point is Labour claims to be committed to environmental protection and criticism of Jeremy Corbyn on this topic is met with claims about his long term stance on this issue, but despite all this they seem to do buggar all about it. Witness the pathetic number of Labour MPs who bothered to show up to the grouse shooting debate. Why is Labour not kicking up more stink about the emasculation of Natural England, for example?
A question of wait and see Mark. I am really struggling to find any ‘real’ commitment from Labour on the environment. I certainly do not believe it is high on their list of priorities and this is a bitter pill to swallow for me.
Left cheek, right cheek, same arse
Really if Jeremy had the Labour party’s interests at heart he would obviously resign.
In fact if he had the uncommitted voters best interests at heart he would.
No honour there then.
Its a subject not getting much airtime at the moment!
If only Corbyn had backed his own early beliefs that MPs should be free to vote to their conscience or how their constituents had expressed their Brexit views, Rachael Maskell wouldn’t have had to resign. She was knowledgeable on her brief and did make some fine points in the DGS debate. One of very few Labour MPs to show up.
