World exclusive, an early draft of the Queen’s speech:
‘My government will find new ways of transferring money from public services to the wealthy few. They will persist with hard Brexit in order to cripple one’s economy. Now that’s it because I’m orfff to Royal Ascot and if they ever have a State Opening of Parliament which clashes with one’s racing again then I’ll send one of youngsters to read out this tripe. Anyway, Sheikh Mohammed tells me to bet one of my castles on Dream Castle in the Jersey Stakes so I’ve got to go.‘

Mark, sorry but I find this post of your distasteful and sadly typical of how some in conservation seem to want to be perpetually out of touch with the broader public.
The Queen has given a lifetime of service to this country, including being very supportive of conservation and bird groups. These groups, including WWT which she was patron of for many years have been fulsome in their tribute to her and all that it has meant to their work at home and abroad. She was a close friend of Sir Peter and Lady Scott and I have fond memories of seeing her at Slimbridge with Sir Peter. The Duke also has always taken a keen and supportive interest and is president of the BTO.
I find it quite appalling that you should put up this post, which does nothing but show you have some kind of political angst with the monarchy. You are of course entitled to your view but I feel all this post does is poke fun at people who are both birders/conservationists and who also have respect and admiration for Her Majesty. It is off putting and tacky. As someone who has a certain position in birding/conservation circles I feel you should think not just about a narrow clique of people who are against the monarchy but respect those who are as committed to conservation as you are are but also respect Her Majesty. Keep off the silly personal stuff and respect everyone and stop thinking everyone in conservation is some kind of anti monarchist ultra left winger.
Mike – many thanks for your comment.
The Queen doesn’t write the Queen’s Speech – she just reads it out – so it is difficult to see how anything she might say, or I might put into her mouth, could possibly reflect badly on her.
