Dr Coffey’s reading list (17)

Therese Coffey

Dr Therese Coffey is the junior minister at Defra. Now that Gavin Gamble’s e-petition in favour of banning driven grouse shooting has passed 10,000 signatures Dr Coffey will need to sign off a government response.

In order that she does not make Defra look even more foolish than they do already I am providing a reading list for the minister to inform her response.

Please sign this e-petition to ban driven grouse shooting and put Dr Coffey on the spot.

Today I’ll give you a break from reading Dr Coffey. Just have a look at these two videos and then think what you are going to do because doing nothing is not an option anymore. Yes one of them is from Scotland but you know, as we know, that similar things are going on in our national parks and AONBs too.

If you think that the minister with responsibility for wildlife should move against the causes of wildlife crime then please sign this e-petition to nudge this minister to do something.

  1. Watching both videos makes me sick and ashamed at the lack of ANY proactive action by our government to bring the illegal slaughter of England’s ‘protected’ raptors to an end, in particular on moorland where red grouse are shot for so called sport. To put the situation into context the killing of birds of prey is as bad, if not worst, in the UK as it is in many countries abroad. If the trend of killing these birds with impunity continues, they are certain to disappear completely from our uplands sooner rather than later. By then it will be too late to do anything.

  2. Her and other politicians are the biggest culprits of raptor persecution as they have it in their hands to solve it at a stroke.

  3. Dennis you have hit the golden nail squarely on the head, how right you are. There is little doubt we have a pathetic Government, who when it comes to game shooting and raptors, is dictated to my those within the Tory party that are heavily involved with shooting. They are all looking after their own interests not the electorate or the country, I would like to see the lot of them lined up and Sxxx.

  4. I’m not sure that the politicians are the biggest culprits although they doubtless have a part to play, its not just their failure to provide adequate laws to protect our wildlife and to punish the guilty, not just the culprits but the commissioners too (owners and agents) We need a seismic shift in the attitudes of many, no debates about raptor predation just a simple set of laws that effectively protect OUR heritage. Politicians are certainly guilty of a failure to do all that. It is still the owner, agent who commission the crime and the keeper who actually commits the offence who are the guilty ones. I’m not sure shame is the right word Terry, although I know what you mean. How about rightful indignation that this is allowed to continue or just plain old fashioned anger and a bloody mindedness to ensure it will stop.
