Ian Parsons of Griffon Holidays says:
‘The killing of raptors and other wildlife, not to mention the huge amount of environmental harm that driven grouse shooting does, has to stop. Griffon Holidays exists to show people the brilliant raptors etc of Extremadura in Spain, these brilliant birds generate money for ourselves and for the local Extremaduran economy. There could be an opportunity to do the same in many parts of Britain, people can create business opportunities that benefit the local population, the only thing that is needed is the birds. Stop killing them and that opportunity can become a reality. Driven grouse shooting is underpinned by wildlife crime, illegal activities often carried out with firearms – it is gun crime and the fact that politicians in Britain turn a blind eye to this is shameful.‘

Well said – it’s interesting to note that Scottish Land and Estates seems to have been very reluctant to post anything about the success of ecotourism ventures generally and ‘raptor tourism’ specifically. They wouldn’t have a strong bias against genuine ecotourism because that would scupper driven grouse shooting and that other insanity open hill deer stalking would they? We are losing jobs as well as wildlife and for those of us who aren’t interested in killing things for fun our quality of life is compromised – a golden eagle would do far more to lift the spirits than an expanse of burnt heather.
