Last year I recorded which days I saw Red Kites, this year I am keeping a list of birds seen in or from my garden.
Well, I’m on a respectable but not very impressive 24 species so far:
- Robin
- House Sparrow
- Jackdaw
- Blackbird
- Woodpigeon
- Starling
- Black-headed Gull
- Great Tit
- Red Kite
- Carrion Crow
- Chaffinch
- Goldfinch
- Rook
- Collared Dove
- Dunnock
- Wren
- Long-tailed Tit
- Blue Tit
- Common Gull
- Redwing
- Fieldfare
- Reed Bunting
- Greenfinch
- Blackcap
The Blackcap turned up yesterday and will appear on February’s list too.
I haven’t put a lot of time into this in January – I’ll try to be more assiduous in February. And I’m looking forward to warmer days and more bird song.

Seems a reasonable garden list to me, in our rural garden in mid Wales we missed the gulls, Rook, the two pigeons, Redwing, Fieldfare, Reed Bunting and Blackcap. However the species we saw but are not on Mark’s list were Coal Tit, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Siskin, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Raven, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Pheasant, Magpie and Lesser Redpoll. I’ve added Song Thrush in February so far. Surprised we haven’t had Brambling there are quite a few locally or Mistle Thrush and this time last year we had a daily Little Egret.
As to Kites in January I saw 68 birds on 20 days but this included one day with 31 and another with 10.
