I think the whole issue has become a total farce and now appears to be a waste of time. The politicians in question don’t even appear to think this is such a good idea afterall. The back-stop remains an issue and as this remains unresolved, I cannot see any progression except to say perhaps it is time to swallow one’s pride and admit that this will become a grave mistake.
This is my understanding of it all. The irony is of course is that the Brexiteers who have citizenship from birth or descent, cannot even, in some cases, apply for an Irish passport so if the IRA has to step in here and plant more bombs here and there, it is the Brexiteers who will become targets and not the ones who can flee to Ireland!
Have I gone mad or is this what could happen?
I’m not sure I understand the second part of your comment Sally.
“If the IRA has to step in here and plant more bombs” – do you think there are circumstances in which the IRA would be justified in resuming bombing – or even obliged to do so? I can’t say I agree with that premise.
The possibility of restoring a hard border in Ireland may indeed put enough strain on the peace accord for terrorism to rear its ugly head again and I think that is one (of many) of the reasons why Brexit is such a terrible idea. However, if it happens, a mass flight of people from the UK to Ireland hardly seems to be a practical solution to the problem and I can’t see much relevance to whether or not some or any Brexiteers are eligible for Irish citizenship. I’d imagine that most Brexiteers don’t want any other nationality than British.
I agree with your suggestion that it would be a good idea to recognise that we can’t square the circle of an open border with Ireland but no customs union and that we therefore should consider cancelling article 50 (though how that can be achieved democratically god only knows).
There comes a time in even the most foolish of us lives that we stop banging our heads on the wall and decide that it hurts and we must change tack. That Terrible Theresa and her crowd of charlatans and incompetents have as yet, as we approach the cliff edge, to realise this says it all about them really. It is surely time they took a very deep breath, withdrew or suspended Article 50 and had a proper grown up conversation, which may involve a general or leadership election, about what we should really be doing next. The alternative is to behave like mythological lemmings!
There cannot be many people in the UK who have not been aware of the number of jobs already gone or announced to be going l. There are many people unfortunately who do not realise that this is due to Brexit and that Brexit wil have it’s most grave consequences to come. The preference is to blame the EU who clearly spelt out the options and have not changed tack. The government meanwhile still does not know what they will offer the parliament and the people, but is adamant that it was, is and will remain the only show in town.
They must think we are stupid.
Perhaps most people are.
How true the cartoon is. What a farce it is, while trying to avoid the fundamental divisions and wars in the Tory Party the whole country is being down graded by this Government to third world status economically and politically and is becoming a laughing stock.
