Sunday quotes (12)

A series of quotes relevant to the environment and/or campaigning.

This week’s quote is from Senator John Kerry (born 1943).

I saw courage both in the Vietnam War and in the struggle to stop it. I learned that patriotism includes protest, not just military service.

  1. It’s all very well George Osborne calling for a delay to Brexit – but we shouldn’t forget that it was his signature policy, austerity, that played a major role in the leave vote. We will never know the full truth but there seems little doubt – especially with the predominance of leave in some of the ‘outer areas’ – the north and Wales – that opposition to the Government in general rather than anything to do with the EU played a big part in the leave win.

In contrast to voting to leave the EU, which was wrong and gets worse day by day, voting against Osborne’s austerity was absolutely right and has my total support – Government of the rich for the rich is falling apart all over Europe. Fiscal prudence was necessary when the Tories came to power – but what emerged, the devastation of local Government and the unspeakable and dishonest attacks on the poor and disabled have as much to do with splitting the country as Brexit, which sadly has deflected attention from the suffering Government policy is causing.

    1. I was told that if they had wished to avoid austerity all they needed to do was to put a 0.25% tax on all share deals of more than £100 anywhere in the UK. however that would have taxed their friends rather than the ordinary man in the street and those least able to afford it– Typical self interest Tories!
John Kerry has more intelligence than all of the current incumbent government in the US combined. With the current administrations there and here, oh how the mighty are fallen.

  2. What a fabulous quote from John Kerry. It shows that there are still some high quality people in public service in the USA. JFK said after the war that “the concencious objector should receive the same recognition as the warrior does”

    1. Alan – yes, I partly chose it to remind us that, as with we Brits, the lowest have sunk lower but the highest are still very high.
