What he says is true as long as journalism acts responsibly and it probably did when he was at the top of his profession in the nineteen sixties or so. Today at least in the U.K. I am sorry to say a lot of the press are now grossly irresponsible. There are many examples, the royalty are suffering at the moment. When the press is irresponsible it does the reverse and undermines democracy very much and this is what is happening presently.
I think good, responsible journalism is what we need to help make democracy work. Not much sign of that on the front pages of most of the Sunday papers today. Sadly, even the BBC, with its obsession with “balance”, finds it difficult to call out the liars.
The film Ace in the Hole was made in 1951. It’s many years since I saw it. I wonder if it’s dated much.
