The Blue Tits in the nestbox in my garden have hatched, judging by the behaviour of the adults over the last few days. There are millions of pairs of Blue Tits in the UK, but these are ‘my’ Blue Tits and are special (to me at any rate).
One parent was flying down the road about 150m to a shrub growing up the wall of a house – maybe cotoneaster? – I’m not very good on plants. But I did watch the parent make about 10 visits, one after the other, unhesitatingly, to this area to find some morsel and return to the nestbox, dive in, do whatever it did and then leap out and head straight back to the same shrub. And then, and I’m imagining it had decided it had exhausted that patch fior now, it started going in the opposite direction where it was difficult for me to watch.
The action is bound to accelerate as the chicks grow. It’s better than daytime TV.

Millions of pairs of a voracious predator that will ruthlessly predate countless caterpillars (or should I say “little baby moths”). Surely there is a need for someone to ‘restore the balance’? 😉
Good luck with the blue tits – hopefully they will fledge a a healthy brood in due course.
mind you, everything is better than daytime TV
Double disappointment for me this year. The female bluetit was found dead by the pond a couple of weeks ago (we’ve had cat problems) and all attempts by the very persistant male to find a new mate seem to have failed. I’ve also got a camera in the great tit box for the first time this year but it got knocked out of line somehow a few days after the eggs were laid and now I can’t see the chicks. Lots of cheeping and regular visits from the parents though so all is well in there so far.
