Bird surveys under COVID 19

Advice from the BTO:

Not straightforward is it? That’s what it’s like running an international bird survey with different administrations taking slightly different lines on travel etc. Still, you might expect a global pandemic to have some major impacts and this isn’t one of them!

Restrictions in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland will have to lift pretty quickly for the BBS to be a possibility in these nations. But, taking account of restrictions, there is little reason why, if volunteers are up for it, and if landowners give permission for access, a decent evaluation of bird population trends shouldn’t be feasible.

I’m glad I got out this morning to do one first visit to a BBS square, and I’m planning to visit my other BBS square on Friday morning.

  1. The advice for Scotland is bollocks and I’m ignoring it.

I’ll be submitting my data as usual and it’s up to the BTO whether they use it or not.
