Rules – do you have new rules?

Rules restaurant menu from 2015 – prices may have changed!

Dear Rules Restaurant

I once treated a couple of friends of mine to a meal at your place and I’m wondering whether to invite them back for a post-lockdown get together some time.

However, I contacted you several years ago about your policy on lead contamination of your game meat. Rather bizarrely you didn’t answer my questions about the quality of the food you serve at your restaurant but referred me to the GWCT.

I trust that you have noticed that GWCT has, under a certain amount of pressure, changed their advice on lead in game meat.

There’s a good discussion of just some of the issues surrounding lead ammunition on the Radio4 radio programme The Life Scientific which can be accessed by clicking here.

You will no doubt also have noticed that a range of shooting organisations have conceded that lead has to go although they are dragging their feet about getting on with it.

You’ll also have noticed, I hope, that Waitrose are going lead-free in its sales of game meat from this autumn.

And I expect you don’t need to be reminded of the advice from NHS England and the Food Standards Agency on consuming game meat which has been shot with lead ammunition.

I have three questions for you please to inform my and my friends’ dining, or perhaps lunching, decision;

  • what steps have you taken to source lead-free game meat for your customers?
  • do you provide lead-free game meat on your menu?
  • does your menu warn customers of the risks of eating game meat which contains high lead levels?

  1. Well said Mark, you have asked all the questions any sensible person would ask. I shan’t be eating any game until the answers to these questions are clearly printed on menus
