News from the Moorland Association

Given that the Moorland Association has been strangely quiet recently it is worth noting that they are now trying hard to appear very very reasonable. It’s all a bit odd.

Their responses to the RSPB statement on burning and Birdcrime report are rather moderately worded.

I will be interested to see what the Moorland Association has to say when the new RSPB position on gamebird shooting appears on Saturday. The Moorland Association probably knows more about it than do the RSPB’s million members or most RSPB staff at the moment.

This is worth a read.

On Hen Harriers, it’s a pity that the Moorland Association continues to muddy the waters on Hen Harrier numbers and breeding success. There weren’t 19 nests in England this year, there were 24 of which 19 produced some chicks. We don’t know how many of these were on grouse moors because it is not public knowledge where these nests were exactly and the Moorland Association play what I regard as fast and loose with what they call a grouse moor. the Moorland Association now claim that 40 of the 60 Hen Harrier chicks which were produced came from grouse moors. Presumably these 40 chicks include all those raised on the United Utilities land which is not primarily managed as a grouse moor. And it looks to me as though this figure must also include the nests which were brood-meddled.

On burning, we are still waiting for DEFRA to fulfill their promises.

Well, that’s nice of them! This is actually an interesting read.

  1. “Sustainable levels”, they are the key words from Mrs Anderson.
On the Eagle story , i cant recall hearing about the JAHAMA group before, they seem to be doing some good stuff, but please not the
    Glenshero wind farm.

  2. I afraid I find Mrs Anderson’s utterances about as honest, straight forward and believable as those of our provenly serially lying PM blondie fornicating bloody Johnson.
