Illegal use of lead ammunition to shoot Mallards continues

This paper looks at lead pellets retrieved from shot Mallards in the 2020/21 shooting season at a time long after the use of lead ammunition to shoot ducks was made illegal in England (similar but slightly different rules apply in other UK nations). Most Mallards in the study were shot with lead ie they were illegally shot.

The paper is a good clear read – unless of course you are a shooter, and then it is uncomfortable reading documenting the lack of compliance with the law.

    1. Indeed, there is no justification for allowing continued use of lead. As long as shooters can legally buy lead cartridges and their use is only banned in some situations, compliance will continue to be poor. Whether legally compliant or not, the use of lead shot causes a build up of toxic heavy metal in the environment that is simply not justified
