I hardly ever watch Chris Packham on TV – he’s a friend and I just sit there slightly nervously hoping he isn’t going to say anything that gets him into trouble. But I’ll watch this 5-episode series on evolution because it’s a challenging subject to tackle and it is right up my street. Also, Chris’s series Earth was simply brilliant and I’d like some more of that type of TV,
So, how was last night’s Episode 1? It was eminently watchable. Like Earth, there are challenges in covering over four billion years in an hour when there isn’t any footage to use from key events, and of critical creatures, in the past but some nifty CGI and lots of scenery and exciting creatures from the present are used to build the story. There was good use of boffins at the end too.
A lot of ground was covered in getting from LUCA (last universal common ancestor) to African Savanna Elephants and that will mean that the next four episodes (reproduction, feeding, intelligence and movement) can concentrate on their particular subjects. I’m looking forward to them.

I loved it … I’d also a programme that could in more detail how the science discord / probes what happened millions of years ago or is it simply fossils ?!
