The RSPB issued the following stiff reminder of the law to media contacts earlier today:
Urgent Media Alert: Drone and Helicopter activity over RSPB Minsmere wildfire
For immediate attention of News Desks, Picture Desks and Aviation Teams
We are aware of increased media interest in the fire at and around the Minsmere area in Suffolk. We would like to remind all broadcasters, aerial operators and freelance media teams that Minsmere includes nationally important wildlife habitats protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The use of drones and low-flying helicopters over sensitive areas of the reserve can cause significant disturbance to breeding birds and other wildlife, particularly during the breeding season. Disturbance can result in birds abandoning nests, exposing eggs and chicks to predation or adverse weather, and disrupting feeding and resting behaviour.
Media organisations planning any aerial filming should note that Natural England’s consent is required for flights over SSSI land where operations may damage or disturb protected features and wildlife interests. Operators must ensure they have obtained all necessary permissions before undertaking any aerial activity.
We are therefore asking all news organisations, helicopter operators and drone pilots to avoid flying over the most sensitive wildlife areas identified on the attached map. These areas are highlighted in green and should be treated as a no-fly zone for media gathering activities.
Responsible reporting is vital, but it is equally important that coverage of the incident does not inadvertently create additional impacts on internationally and nationally important wildlife.
