The first 21,000

It’s taken quite a while (nearly three months) to add the latest 1,000 signatures to our e-petition to ban driven grouse shooting but yesterday it passed 21,000 signatures and there are still three weeks to go. These e-petitions usually get a little bit of a boost as the deadline approaches so we’ll see… Thank you…

Planning for Hen Harrier Day 2015

Earlier this week, in a secret location (so secret I almost couldn’t find it) a group of people met to talk about Hen Harrier Day 2015. Much will be revealed at the Birders Against Wildlife Crime Conference in Buxton on the first day of spring (it’s full – no places left). BAWC will be organising…

I missed this one

In the February Birdwatch there was a very kind review of A Message from Martha by Rob Hume, a former colleague if mine in the RSPB whom I haven’t seen for many years. ‘His [that’s me] strength of feeling comes through on every page, but so does the strength of his arguments‘. No doubt, that’ll…

Inglorious

Inglorious: conflict in the uplands will be available for Hen Harrier Day (9 August), the Inglorious 12th and thereafter. Published by Bloomsbury in late July – but you can order it now on World Book Day.

Coming soon – Behind the Binoculars

This is my next book, and we (it is a joint production with Keith Betton) have just gone through the proofs.  It should be out in early June despite the publisher’s website saying August! The book is a series of interviews with birders about how they got into birds, what birds mean to them, and…

Smart thinking?

A sharp-eyed reader of this blog, bravely venturing ‘up north’, noticed A Message from Martha in Harrogate’s Waterstones and wondered whether it was in the right section – what do you think?         And our North America correspondent send this image of a second hand copy of A Message from Martha  on…

A lovely email from the USA

Still writing to an end-January deadline so little time for reading. Here instead is an email from America, forwarded to me by my publisher: Hello, Mark I just finished reading A MESSAGE FROM MARTHA…I have overwhelming sadness at the destruction of such a prolific bird, and I have anger mixed with sadness for the ignorance…

If you liked Fighting for Birds then…

… you’ve got an 86% chance of liking A Message from Martha.   That’s what the readers’ poll said, anyway. Of the 222 of you who read Fighting for Birds and rated it either ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’ then 86% of you rated A Message from Martha as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’ too.

A Message from Martha is Sunday Express bird book of 2014

I’m very happy to share the Sunday Express Bird Book of the year with Martin Garner’s Challenge Series Autumn. Martin is a great birder who is helping other birders by sharing his knowledge. But following a mention in yesterday’s Guardian of A Message from Martha in the category of best nature literature of 2014 it…

My books aren’t just for Christmas

I know that quite a few people are hoping that they receive A Message from Martha as a Christmas present. Please don’t let them be disappointed… It was nice (for me anyway) to see that A Message from Martha was listed by Stephen Moss in the Guardian as one of the best examples of nature…
