I’ve been wandering around Scotland recently and had a great time seeing scenery and wildlife.
I think I may set you a little brain teaser about it in a while so I won’t give too much away. However, wildlife highlights have included otter, red squirrel, Scotch argus, bottle-nosed dolphin, leaping salmon and the occasional midge.
How has your summer been – or is the best yet to come?

Mark, There is one word in here that gives me me hope for my holidays. In September we are in the outer Hebrides for a couple of weeks and you have raised my anticipation by using the word ‘occasional’ against the midges.
I’ve just come back from a week in Iceland – fantastic weather (unusually), spectacular scenery with wonderful wildlife encounters including humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, gyr falcon, Barrow’s goldeneye, harlequin duck, Slavonian grebe, and more red-necked Phalaropes (at one point 400 on one lake) – with some really close – than I’ll probably ever see again in my life. Until I go back, that is.
And yet, I took a walk today by the river near home, listened to the yellowhammers and watched the banded demoiselles fluttering about and brown hawkers patrolling the water, and I didn’t miss Iceland so much.
Rob – great comment, thank you.
