From Saturday lunchtime I will be featuring, every week, the artwork of Jonnie Fisk.
Jonnie says “I’m a 18 year old birder, insect-enthusiast and frustrated artist from North Yorkshire, having been held in rapture by nature for most of my life. My birding is split between the moors around my house, Beaver Dyke Reservoir and the window of any classroom I find myself in. I represent the Next Generation Birders @NGBirders as their PR, marketing and social media rep. My favourite bird is the nightjar.”
Jonnie produces art about the interesting birds seen over the previous week. Here, is last week’s offering.

i really enjoy Jonnie’s work and it will be great to see it on your blog too. Great stuff Jonnie, your art always brings a smile to my face.
Very nice, but I’m not so sure about the definition of ‘interesting birds’. Does that mean everything except Linnet?
David – good point!
Wow ! Love the style, Jonnie – its not often you get to see something really original and I think its great !
And hugely supportive of Next Generation Birders – especially after what Mark said about the BTO conference. We seem to live in an era where we’re going backwards, the enthusiasm and idealism of youth is trampled on by a ‘you can’t change that’ attitude amongst older people. I was a BTO RR at 25 and on RSPB council (to the horror of the establishment) and with the (subversive) help of a certain M Avery – and I’d been an RSPB member longer than half the Council members, most of whom were in their 50s – so my message is go for it, be ready to learn but just because your 18 its doesn’t mean you haven’t learnt more than people 3X your age and – most of all – don’t accept its impossible, it isn’t.
Grateful of your support Roderick! And thank you Mark for recognising Jonnie’s rather unique talent!
Well done Jonnie, I love the way you have captured the Baikal Teal. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next set of art work.
Love the art – fantastic and look forward to seeing more on your blog, but crikey.. I know I’m getting old now.. he only looks about 12.
Good to see there is another generation coming along. Are there any more. Anyone of the “younger generation” interested in our Flora (no, not a woman before anyone asks).
One comment about birders. Why do they speak shorthand, so the rest of us cannot understand i.e. sprawk. It is like botanists saying prose for primrose?
Why does anyone talk in shorthand occasionally? I nearly always say Lotti instead of long-tailed tit, as its just such a mouthful, and people always like to speak the lingo.
Matthew – welcome and thank you. IMHO u r rite, lol.
Perhaps there should be a list for none birders to understand? How about Bowl for barn owl or Git for great tit? Patcher for pied flycatcher. Some species might be a bit risky though.
Diapensia – nice! I think I know which species you might be thinking about.
