It’s John Armitage’s birthday today – Happy Birthday John!

I know that some of you have been meaning to get around to adding your signatures to John’s e-petition on licensing grouse moors, so why not do it today and make it a birthday present!?

The e-petition has picked up a bit of pace recently and still has well over a month to run.  As I write it is at 7880 and it would be great to pass 7900 and be well on the way to 8000 by the end of the day.

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing‘ – please do this very little something.

  1. Mark, many thanks for this. A mark of a real friend one might say! I recently contacted around 190 groups in England ( Nat, Hist. Socs., Bird Groups etc ) and clearly they’ve done their stuff as the signature total has increased. Thank you to all concerned.
I’ve learned a lot in the last year re promotion of this sort of material and suspect we’re in the middle of a real revolution in that social media is beginning to change the game plan. Your efforts in this respect are much appreciated.
However, I also worry about the complacency factor. I put out an entry on the BBC WinterWatch site drawing attention to the petition. It brought about a reaction to BBC impartiality by publicising such matters and comments about the beauty of seeing such birds. I agree with the latter , but if it means not seeing such beauty in , say, ten years time because of continuing persecution that surely underscores the need for action. There’s still a lot to be done!!
From the 72 year old activist ( still )!!!!!

  2. That it was John’s birthday slipped by me, happy birthday John. As to the petition I signed it at the beginning and would urge all with the remotest interest in our uplands to do the same. Current management of grouse moors is to say the least scandalous and a national shame.

  3. work done on certain reserves show that natural food can be provided for these birds to winter in numbers providing an amazing spectacle. new feeding habits for this bird are just one thing learnt from this management. this shows that the ‘white rat’ feeding is a waste of time and that these management techniques should be used instead. [still writing with one finger after a fall!! ]

  4. Have any MP’s shown any interest in this Mark? Haven’t been following this campaign too closely I confess, although I have signed of course and persuaded a few chums to as well.
