And that quiz?

This list of birds was from…?

It’s a slightly odd list – comprising winter and summer visitors, but not many of either. Waxwing, Fieldfare and Redwing, and Swallow, Blackcap and Whitethroat,  but not much else. That’s a bit odd.

Mostly big birds that are easy to see, too.

I told you these came from multiple visits which were not to look for birds.

Red Kite narrows down the geographic possibilities – but, I’m glad to say, not nearly as much as it used to.

House Sparrow, Collared Dove, and maybe Waxwing and Swift, suggest it could be urban.

There’s not a lot to go on and I can see why several people suggested Cheltenham racecourse (where I have seen many of these species but never Whitethroat or Blackcap – NH racing is a winter pursuit).

It was my local railway station of Wellingborough.  There are now, almost always Red Kites there, and the little bit of scrub by the platform keeps me amused while waiting for a train in case there is something interesting hopping about in it.

David Ball first mentioned a railway station – well done David!

And Diane G nailed it as Wellingborough Station – well done to you too!

It was just for fun.  I enjoyed it!

  1. Thanks Mark. The Grey Wagtail threw me a little as I didn’t realise how close the River Ise was to the station, being a northern girl.

  2. Thanks,

Feeling -‘Choughed’ –just remembered someone running a supermarket waxwing sighting league table once, but thought, no not even your goodself would have that list -so it just happened to be somewhere you had time to kill- but I didn’t know whether you caught a train from Kettering or Wellingborough .

Flyovers on a patch are great fun -I keep a list on the dog walk round my local fields (East Haddon/Holdenby) and have cormorant and little egret on that !
