Lost and found

IMG_3311

I was lost but I found this rare Sulphur Clover plant by the side of the road somewhere in deepest Suffolk (apologies for the poor photo – on my mobile phone from the car!).

Well, actually I found a nice man who got me unlost and was also marking the verge where the Sulphur Clover was living. You’re right, I wouldn’t, unaided, have had a clue myself!

Although I won’t tell you where I was – after all, I was lost – here is a Suffolk Wildlife trust nature reserve where you might see some Sulphur Clover if you have a look.

  1. I found a ‘molland lilly’ the other day in similar circumstances not actually lost but attempting difficult climb up to twitchen on my bike

  2. SNAP! It seems to be a particularly Suffolk thing, looking at verges, I met a granny, grandad and grandson out looking for orchids on the verges bordering the farm I worked at near Ipswich. Gives you a bit of a lift when you unexpectedly meet people doing this sort of thing. The continuance of a worthwhile tradition, genuine nature study, rather than another Victorian one that could be mentioned.

  3. Someone walking along a road on Pride Park in Derby last week (not far from The Sanctuary) found 80 bee orchids growing on the road verge and informed the wildlife trust. The city council (remember them and their wonderful cycle track proposal?) are responsible for the road verges there….so we held our breath.
However, immediately we told the local supervisor about the orchids, he willingly agreed not to mow that stretch of verge and went along to admire them! He even told us of interesting plants elsewhere that he’s saved…so there’s (some) hope yet!
