Oscar Dewhurst – Little Owl

untitled-12

Oscar writes: while I was in Richmond Park one evening I was told about a family of little owls with two chicks that had been seen in a small bit of woodland. Next morning I was up at 3.45 to get there for before sunrise, and as I approached the trees I could immediately see two perched on the tree protectors. Over the next couple of hours I was able to get plenty of images of the young ones, and this one of one of the adults.

  1. I’ve seen them in the park only once before, so far. Now I’ll have to get out there and see if I can spot them again, now that I’m free for the summer hols! Though not necessarily that early in the morning. Though I have been known to get out early once in a while 🙂

    1. It’s worth doing, especially for these. After about 7.30am they’d become very quiet until the evening. Unfortunately it meant some very early starts for me!

    1. Indeed, Daniel, it’s inexplicable.

Apart from the charm of the subject, what an excellent job of crypto-colouration.

    2. I love Oscar’s photos. They brighten my day. Nothing to dislike about them. Just wish I was as good a photographer!

    1. Hi Guy, sorry I’ve only just seen your comment. They’re dotted around all over the park (at least 20 pairs there), and are most active at dawn and dusk. They call all the time early in the morning and late in the evening, so that’s probably the best way to find them.
