A reader’s letter

This was a lovely email to get – and is just the impact that I hoped Inglorious would have with some of its readers.

Hi Mark

Just finished reading your book. Thought it brilliant – particularly chapter six, The sunlit uplands.
I’m sending this just to re-emphasise (what you must already know!) that your campaign is working. I’ve been a passive supporter for some time (I’m a birder that loves raptors) but reading your book has made me want to be an active supporter.
I’m not that active on social media so I’ll try to get my act together there as I agree that it is a powerful campaigning media.
I’m better at writing stuff so I will go down that route certainly (MP, papers etc.)
I’ve now donated to Birders Against Wildlife Crime and assume that’s the best way to financially support Hen Harriers and the campaign.
And I will look out for events to support.
Have, of course, signed all the petitions.
It’s a long time since I’ve been really enthused by an issue and your book did the trick.
Thank you and more power to your elbow.
Cheers

  1. Hi Mark

I remember asking you at Birdfair 2014 if introducing vicarious liability for wildlife crimes mightn’t be a better way forward than an outright ban on driven grouse shooting.

Having read “Inglorious” from cover to cover I will cheerfully admit how wrong I was. The issue isn’t just about the illegal killing of raptors, despicable though that is; as you make so clear, land usage in upland Britain is hopelessly skewed in favour of the leisure pursuits of a wealthy minority.

The appalling floods in N England and NE Scotland must surely draw attention to the idiotic way in which we are running our flood defence policies. What should the wider UK conservation community do this spring and summer to keep the momentum going? And if somebody has a pretty useless MP, to whom should they write to help?

    Sincere best wishes

    Ian Robinson

    1. Ian – thank you.

Write to your useless MP – someone from the other side certainly will be. Just top and tail your comment here and send it off to your MP asking them what they think about the matter – not what Defra is doing – say you want their opinion.

  2. Well Mark, I hope you are sat down when you read this. I actually wandered into a bookshop in Farnham, Surrey (whilst in the UK for the festivities) and bought a copy of Inglorious! Looking forward to reading it and hopefully enjoying the facts and craft of its making.

  3. Hi Mark,
Today I finished reading Inglorious and visited your website only to find, to my intense frustration, that I have just missed the deadline to sign the e-petition. Despite having lived on the south coast for several decades, we have continued to visit and enjoy the North York Moors, near where I spent my first 25 yrs. I am by no means a birder, more a keen walker, so your book was a total eye-opener. Since we are hopefully moving back to the vicinity of the N York Moors, I will certainly keep an eye on this issue and, if possible, support your cause a bit more actively up there.
    Peter Moore
