Tim writes: These King Penguins were photographed just above the largest nesting colony on the planet with hundreds of thousands of nesting pairs. This was on the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia at Saint Andrews Bay. King Penguins are the only birds I have ever encountered that treat humans as if they are birds. We were told to keep a respectful distance but when I laid down to get a low angle I often found myself surrounded by curious penguins. I wanted to capture a low angle here with the spectacular mountain backdrop and the halo of lenticular clouds, so characteristic of cold, mountainous areas.

A wonderful image.
Thanks for taking my mind off the political situation for a time.
Beautiful.
An intimate and nicely convened picture.
But far away north, in another close meeting, one hundred and seventy two years ago, the Great Auk finally gave up its convergently evolved and penguin-like life.
One legacy of that terrible event was the evolution of environmental awareness and legislation that is helping to protect these King Penguins today. The Great Auk lives on.
