Bird Fair 2017 – Day 1

Here we go –  Day 1

Weather forecast – could get a bit blowy and maybe wet towards very end of day (glad I’m not camping – and best of luck to those who are).

Plan for the day – although it will not necessarily happen…

0900 or soon after.  Stand in queue even though I already have a ticket while nice people at entrance try to figure everything out – also try not to look like a ticket tout as I give away a spare 3-day ticket in return for a promise the recipient will spend some money at the BAWC stand

Find Ruth Miller and pay her the cash I owe her (euros)

Drop something off at the African Bird Club stand for Keith Betton

Drop by the Birding for All stand

Check the time of next week’s trustees’ meeting with the World Land Trust – and just say hi!

1000-1030 EVENTS MARQUEE Aim to hear about Arjan Dwarhuis’s 6000 birds in a year trip, maybe. In 30 mins? That’s 200 species/minute and some of them have long names!

1030-1050 Lecture Marquee 2 (which one is that?) Guy Anderson on Spoon-billed Sandpipers

1300-1345 EVENTS MARQUEE Am on a panel ‘The politics of wildlife protection’ – sounds terribly dull but from the emails that have been exchanged I sense it might well not be…

1430-1450 Lecture Marquee 2 Stuart Housden on Golden Eagles

1500-1545 EVENTS MARQUEE Conserving critical critters – this looks lively too

1600-1645 EVENTS MARQUEE Brexit and the environment – could be another lively one.

1800-1845 EVENTS MARQUEE RSPB birders’ lecture – maybe. The programme doesn’t tell me who is giving it so I’m not sure, and I might be driving home by then depending on the wishes of fellow car occupants.

Other excellent talks are available.

Also – have a chat with someone, and another someone and someone else

Also – say ‘Hi Chris – well done mate!’ to Chris Packham

Also – drink a pint of beer

Also – is there any chance to see some birds?

Also – remember to take some photos for a blog this evening.

  1. Some of these on our hit list as well. May see you on the distance. Choice between your debate and Ian Newton’s on Birds and Farming. Difficult!

  2. If you have time on Saturday, visit the British Arachnological Society’s stand (Marquee 8), find out a bit about spiders, harvestmen and pseudoscorpions; and would be great to say hello to you to and thanks.

If not, maybe we’ll bump in to each other later today and I can say hello. Would be happy to pay for your pint.

    Enjoy!

    Richard
