Dear Natural England,
You issued a press release about a Hen Harrier called Mick on 7 February 2017 in which you stated that Mick’s disappearance had been reported to the North Yorkshire Police. Your director, Rob Cooke, said ‘The disappearance of a hen harrier is deeply concerning to all who appreciate these rare and impressive birds. Any information that can shed light on what has happened to Mick will be gratefully received by North Yorkshire Police.’ and David Butterworth of the Yorkshire Dales National Park wildlife crime hotspot said ‘It’s incredibly disappointing that the Yorkshire Dales’ reputation as a wonderful place to visit is being damaged by incidents like this.‘.
In the Hen Harrier data that you partially released a few weeks ago Mick was listed as ‘Missing Fate Unknown’.
Presumably Natural England was not wasting police time by bringing this incident to their attention.
- What were the circumstances that led NE to report this disappearance to the North Yorkshire Police?
- What protocol has NE used in order to decide which ‘disappearing’ Hen Harriers should be reported to the police and after what period of time?
- How many Hen Harrier disappearances from the list you published on 18 September were reported to the police?
- Which birds were reported to the police (please supply Tag ids to identify them).

The dislike was an accident.Sorry.
Bill – no worries!
I sent a FOI request to NE asking for data About where the missing Hen Harriers last known positions were. I received a stock reply along the lines of ‘ if we tell you we’d have to kill you ‘. Blah blah etc.
Me too. I think they are trying to bore us to death. It nearly worked.
