October Birdwatch

October Birdwatch arrived through my narrow late-Victorian letterbox afew days ago and so you’ll find it in newsagents too. Well, when I say you’ll find it there you might not. Not only because the limited numbers are bound to sell out soon but also because there are so many magazines that I find it difficult to find anything in the flock of targets.

Additionally, you might find Birdwatch next to train-spotting magazines (understandable – but a bit harsh (to whom? – ed)), or shooting magazines (which are very numerous) or general countryside magazines or perhaps (though I have never looked) on the top shelf.

So getting a subscription solves all those issues and is cheaper too (although it isn’t actually cheaper if you can never find a copy in a newsagents).

When you have secured this month’s Birdwatch you will find the usual excellent mix of good things inside. There is a good ‘last word’ from Bill Oddie (of course), some identification tips for Ruff, Upland Sandpiper and Buff-breasted Sandpipers, an article about Black Redstarts (smart bird!) and much more.

Writing a monthly column is a privilege and a joy; writing a monthly column called the ‘political birder’ is a bit of a taxing task when politics changes more rapidly than the top rarity on Fair Isle. On reading my column (I always have to in order to remember what it was/is about) then I was relieved that it wasn’t at all out of date. Phew!
