Repeal the Weeds Act of 1959

I’d really like to see this e-petition get over the 10,000 signature barrier and trigger a government response. It and all other open e-petitions on the parliament website probably have until mid-October (and the start of a general election campaign) before they will be automatically curtailed. But it is, I’m sure you will agree, a bit difficult to predict such things these days.

But another 1100 signatures in about two weeks ought to be quite easy.

Here is the map of where the current signatures come from – I reckon you could add a signature or two to the map if you tried.

Please sign this e-petition .

  1. Thanks for pointing this one up, not one we’ve seen so two more added. Still don’t understand why a petition given six months to run has to be curtailed because of an election. Hardly democratic is it.

  2. Duly signed. Keeping the weeds is really important because so much feeds of the weed seeds. Have just been to Spain and there there are many corners on farm land full of dried up weed seeds supporting flocks of small birds. However even there where the big farming combines have moved in with their huge machines, everything has been sprayed off to make the land “neat and tidy”. What a disaster that is for our wildlife. We need to think how we can change the mentality of most people who think all their land must be “neat and tidy”. It is so unwittingly damaging to our wild life.

  3. Just signed.
Creeping Thistle – celebrate its heaven sent vanilla scent and all the insects that are attracted to its modest mauve flowers.
Ban the ’59 Act and make Cirsium arvense an emblem for the patron saint of left field fields and subversive street-wise weeds.
