Well, that happened a bit earlier than I expected but all good things must come to an end.

Many of you will have received the same email from the Petitions Committee that I did which included this message;

The current Petitions Committee, the group of MPs who decide whether petitions are debated, won’t exist after 6 November. This means that if any of the petitions has over 100,000 signatures, they can’t be scheduled for debate during this Parliament. After the election, there will be a new Petitions Committee, and they will be responsible for deciding which petitions are debated.

Hmmm. Having delayed the publication of this e-petition an unusually long time, and having delayed setting a date for its debate for a long time we now have to wait for a new Petitions Committee to be formed.

Anyway…

Many thanks to all who signed and made this the most successful petition on banning driven grouse shooting of all time – having reached 100,000 signatures in 20 days, and its final tally of very nearly 112,000 signatures in less than half the time that would be normally be available. It shows that there is no lack of enthusiasm for this campaign. Thank you again to all who signed – we should all feel reasonably content with the momentum.

Calder Valley was the most supportive constituency with 510 signatures but it was very close with Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey on 509 signatures.

More analysis to follow in due course.

In contrast, the rival petition simply bombed…

…and fell over 100,000 signatures short of the ‘ban’ petition, not even reaching the 10,000 signature threshold.

  1. Once again, it is impressive that its constituencies closest to where raptors are being killed that seem to feel most strongly – hard to claim its all townies who don’t understand the countryside.
